CCSD high school students excel in art competitions across the state
Cache County School District students are leaving their mark on the Utah high school art scene--earning awards, scholarships, and recognition at various art competitions across the state. High school students submitted their pieces to the Eccles Art Center Northern Utah Student High School Art Competition (NUHS) and the Springville Museum of Art High School Art Show, hoping to have their art on display for the public and receive a scholarship or award. Entries were considered and examined using elements of design, composition, and skill level.
At the 51st Annual Utah All-State High School Art Show at the Springville Museum of Art, an art competition for juniors and seniors only, 335 pieces of artwork were selected out of 1,063 entries submitted to be displayed. Of those 335 pieces, nine CCSD students received awards and scholarships for their work. In addition, at the NUHS competition, three students from our district received scholarships. A list of the award and scholarship winners from both competitions is below.
For these students, creating art is more than just the competitions and awards they receive. For many, art is a big part of who they are. “I have always seen the world through the lens of a brush and paint. When I was still in diapers, I would tell stories through crayons and washable markers. I always had a pencil in my hand, drawing anything and everything in my head and around me. When you fall in love with the world around you, it's not difficult to paint every aspect of it,” explained Lucy Britsch, a Green Canyon High School junior. “Eventually, It got to the point where art was the highlight of my life, where a simple doodle would pull me out of the worst of lulls. Creating art is how I express everything about myself and cope with life. Humans were uniquely created with the capability to they, themselves, create anything and everything. Why shouldn't I try my best to live up to that standard? Art hasn't just played a role in my life. Art is my life.”
Art programs are an integral part of each school in our district. “So many times I have seen the process of creating artwork become deeply infused into the soul of a student,” explained Jeff Nebeker, art teacher at Green Canyon High School. “When a student is willing to put in the time and effort required for excellent artwork, I see them walk away from a finished piece for which they have a deep feeling of accomplishment and pride in what they have created.”
