Who's ready to learn? Kindergarten is a great place to start!
Kindergarten is when students learn fundamental skills that will set them up for success in education and life. According to Kylie Weiszhaar and Cora Buie, kindergarten teachers at Greenville Elementary School, kindergarten is where students learn things like phonics, the alphabet, and making sounds.
While these skills are crucial for students, teachers want them to learn much more. “The most important thing I want my students to learn this year is being kind and making friends. I feel that students will have a more successful year and future if they can work with their friends and build those relationships with their peers and teachers,” said Weiszhaar. In kindergarten, students continue to develop crucial social skills such as interacting with peers, understanding and regulating their emotions, and how to learn. These skills will help children far beyond the classroom.
Kindergarten also allows kids to explore the world and become their own people. “My favorite part of teaching kindergarten is watching the kiddos learn to love school and watching them learn how to be little people! Kindergarten is so much more than academics. For a lot of these kiddos, it’s their first time leaving home, and I love that it’s a safe place for them to discover more about themselves and the world around them,” said Buie.
