Alumni Spotlight: Sky View High School's Rob McKenna
Rob McKenna, Sky View HS Class of 1991
Over the years, Cache Valley students study, graduate, and many leave the valley to further their education and experience. These alumni are well-prepared to find success, and some, like Sky View High School alumnus Rob McKenna, choose to return to their Cache Valley roots.
Recently inducted into Sky View’s Athletic Hall of Fame, McKenna was a three-sport athlete in the Class of 1991. Along with being a member of the Student Council and the Executive Council, McKenna lettered in basketball, baseball, and track and field. He was also voted Most Outstanding Track Athlete. McKenna continued his education and sports career at Ricks College and later Utah State University, where he was named a Conference Decathalon Champion. He set many track records both in high school and in college before graduating with an MBA with honors from Indiana University.
In 2011, McKenna co-founded and operated a private management consulting practice that serves colleges, universities, and corporations across the United States. McKenna was a product marketing executive for two Fortune 500 companies and is a co-inventor on multiple US medical device patents. He and his family have recently moved back to Cache Valley and are happy to be home.
McKenna credits a lot of his success to his Cache Valley roots. “I have traveled to many places and have always felt like growing up here prepared me well. In Cache County, you learn and are exposed to a lot that prepares you to engage with the rest of the world. There are a lot of smart people here. Many have lived in other places and have chosen to come back and live here. There’s a great infrastructure for education to help prepare people to make an impact on the world.”
McKenna's legacy does not only extend to athletic accomplishments, but also to his current work with environmental issues. He hopes to leave a legacy that will help other people to work hard and always progress. “You realize there’s a challenge each of us has to be a good steward of the resources we have and try to be as efficient and minimally invasive as possible. I hope to help as many people as I can and hopefully leave the world a better place.”
