Green Canyon debate team wins "Triple Crown" as they dominate in region, division and state competitions
In what debate coach Gordon Peer names “the most successful year for students,” the Green Canyon debate team has won the 4A UHSAA Debate and Speech State Championship title. The team consists of about 75 members, with only a handful of seniors.
“It was a really cool feat,” said Peer, who attributes the win to a year-long process full of many successes for the Green Canyon debate team. In their October-March season, Green Canyon debate achieved what is called the “Triple Crown” -- meaning their team won the district, region, and state competitions!
In preparation for the debate tournaments, Peer estimates that students put in a 25 hour per week commitment on top of their schoolwork. He attributes their success to dedication, hours of hard work, and an extremely supportive community, school administration and staff. “I have been impressed by how much the family mentality has been there this year,” Peer said. “Teachers let us use their classrooms, the library lets us use their side rooms, and teachers and coaches have been understanding of long tournaments. There is a family mentality to the team, which is a reflection of the family mentality of the faculty and community as they have rallied around them.”
Across our district, students on the high school Speech and Debate teams have done extremely well in the competitions this year. At each school, there have been great successes on both individual and team levels.
