Green Canyon Student-Athletes Take State in Academic Success
On and off the court or in and out of the pool, student-athletes at Green Canyon know that they are students first and then athletes. Their dedication to education and academics has paid off--and the boys and girls basketball teams have been named the 2018-2019 4A UIAAA Team Academic State Champions! The swimming team was also recognized for the academic success of its athletes.
This is the first year that the Utah Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (UIAAA) has considered not only the individual athlete’s academic performance but also teamwide academic performance. Chris Long, the 3A/4A Member-At-Large of the UHSAA Athletic Directors Executive Committee, praised Green Canyon for having both its boys and girls basketball teams win this award: “Having one team is a great accomplishment, but having two is simply amazing!”
The girls basketball team had a cumulative GPA of 3.99, while the boys basketball team had a cumulative GPA of 3.84. The Green Canyon swimming team is also being recognized for its student-athletes’ academic success of earning a 3.78 cumulative GPA.
As Green Canyon is a relatively new school, these teams have paved the way not only in athletics but also in academics. Green Canyon Principal Dave Swenson echoed Long’s praise. He said, “What [this award] shows to me is that we have represented the term ‘student-athlete’ well. A student-athlete is a student first and then an athlete. We are proud of our teams.”
“This is an amazing honor,” Athletic Director Missy Stuart added, “We have such great athletes here at Green Canyon and this is a very impressive honor for them.”
The teams will be presented with their respective awards at the state basketball tournament at Southern Utah University later this season. These Green Canyon students show the caliber of student-athletes we have within the district. Go Wolves!
