Bestselling author Brandon Mull inspires students during visit to Greenville Elementary
On Monday, December 17th, Greenville Elementary students sat on the edge of their seats, eager to hear what Fablehaven author Brandon Mull had to share with them. As part of his visit to the school, the New York Times bestselling author shared stories from his own life, detailing his journey to becoming a full-time author. His books describe magical creatures and enchanting lands and have been widely accepted and cherished throughout the world. For his latest project, Mull has begun a sequel series titled Dragon Watch.
Mull’s presentation was interactive and inspired creativity right on the spot. Three student volunteers made up their own imaginary world consisting of hamburger floors and a three-headed dragon with a lollipop tail. Mull taught that while the stories we make up may not exist in the real world, with the help of colorful descriptions and details, we can make the stories come to life. “Use your creative talents to do something cool,” Mull encouraged.
Mull also described four things that good writers do: They have lots of experiences to draw from for their writing, exercise their imagination by telling stories, read a lot of books while paying attention to what other authors do, and share their stories with others. Most importantly, he encouraged students to not be afraid to use their imagination. “Your imagination can take you places,” Mull stated. “If it were not for the creative ideas of others, we would be living in a very boring, inconvenient world.”
