7/20/20 Reopening Plan Letter and Survey

Dear CCSD parents,

The Cache Board of Education will be reviewing the district’s Reopening Plan for the 2020-2021 School Year tomorrow night, July 21st at 5:30 p.m., and is seeking parent feedback before approving the plan and submitting it to the Utah State Board of Education by August 1st. Several weeks ago, we sent parents the State reopening requirements and recommendations and asked for feedback to help us develop the plan. We received over 6,000 responses, representing over 90% of our households. Concerns fell into six main categories: face coverings, children coming to school ill, school cleaning, social and emotional health, the availability of online instruction, and last but not least, a desire for normalcy when it comes to in-person instruction.

We have attempted to address all of these issues in our reopening plan, which we have attached for your review. At the beginning of the plan, we reiterate our goal to maintain a sense of normalcy by having in-person instruction take place Monday through Friday, following the already-approved school calendar for the upcoming year. The reopening plan has two main sections: Safe & Healthy Schools and Teaching, Learning & Engagement. In the section on Safe and Healthy Schools, we discuss the importance of hygiene, illness monitoring, and cleaning. Specific protocols for each of these topics were developed separately from the reopening plan because these protocols are likely to evolve as new information is received about how to best prevent transmission and spread of the virus.

In the section on Teaching, Learning, and Engagement, we discuss instructional options available to students. The first option is in-person instruction supported by remote learning for those students who may be absent for short periods due to illness or the need to quarantine. The school day will be shortened by 45 minutes for elementary, middle, and high schools to allow teachers to accommodate both in-person and remote learning students. The second option is online school for those students who will not return for in-person instruction. About 8% of the parents who responded to our survey expressed an interest in online school. Pre-registration to help determine the number of students we need to serve for this option will be sent in a separate email.

In addition to our reopening plan, we are attaching two documents that are to be submitted to the State. They are the 2020-2021 Reopening Assurances, which describe how we will implement the state requirements, and the 2020-2021 Mitigation Tactics, which describe how we will help prevent the spread and transmission of the virus in different school settings. We are currently working with the Bear River Health Department on COVID-19 case monitoring, contact tracing, and temporary closing protocols.
