Why Phonics Matters

Phonics is the foundation of reading. It’s the method of teaching children how letters represent sounds, and how those sounds blend together to form words. When kids understand the relationship between letters and sounds, they can decode (sound out) unfamiliar words, which is a key step in becoming confident, independent readers.

What Is Phonics?

Phonics teaches the link between letters and the sounds they make. For example, the letter s makes a /s/ sound, and when paired with h, it makes the /sh/ sound as in ship. By learning these patterns, children can start to read and spell words on their own.

How Can Parents Help at Home?

You don’t need to be a reading expert to support phonics at home. Here are some simple ways to help:

  • Read aloud daily – Hearing you model fluent reading builds vocabulary and understanding.
  • Practice letter sounds – Play games like “I Spy” using beginning sounds (e.g., “I spy something that starts with /b/”).
  • Use magnetic letters – Let kids build simple words and change one letter to make new ones (e.g., cat → bat → bit).
  • Keep it fun and short – Short, playful sessions are more effective than long drills.
  • Celebrate effort – Encourage progress, not perfection. Building confidence is key!

Phonics is a crucial step on your child’s reading journey—and with your support at home, they’ll be well on their way to reading success.
