What is Dual Language Immersion (DLI)?
Dual Language Immersion (DLI) is an innovative approach to bilingual education where students are taught literacy and the core subjects in both English and a second language. This program equips students with advanced language skills, preparing them for future opportunities in a globalized world.
A unique advantage of our magnet model is the enhanced focus on cultural engagement; because every student is enrolled in the DLI program, the entire school environment fosters greater access to cultural activities and creates a cohesive, shared learning experience.
Students who complete the DLI program can earn a total of 9 credits of 3000-level (upper division) language credit through Utah State University and can also earn the Utah Seal of Biliteracy, a prestigious recognition that highlights their proficiency in two languages. This seal is awarded by the state and is a valuable distinction for college applications and career opportunities. Learn more about the Seal of Biliteracy by clicking here.
How the Program Works
Instructional Model & Timeline
The Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program starts in 1st grade and is offered at specific DLI magnet elementary schools. These are schools of choice without geographic boundaries; therefore, all students must apply to attend, and parents are responsible for all transportation to and from school.
Program Overview & Logistics
- Daily Schedule: Because our magnet schools are parent-transportation only, we operate on an earlier start time. This schedule allows families to better manage transportation across multiple schools (secondary and elementary) and provides more time at home in the afternoon with our 3:00 PM dismissal.
- Kindergarten: While the formal DLI model begins in 1st grade, kindergarten at these magnet schools provides an excellent foundation with 100% English instruction. Students enrolled at a DLI magnet school in kindergarten are guaranteed a spot in the program for 1st grade.
- Grades 1–5: Students receive 50% of their instruction in a second language and 50% in English.

Transition Plan
The DLI proposal includes a transition plan to guide the district, families, and students through potential changes. The plan outlines timelines and pathways to support current and future DLI participants.
A four-year transportation solution from Nibley to South Cache is included within this transition plan. Further details will be forthcoming. All remaining transportation needs are the responsibility of the parents or adult guardians.

| Notes: | *RHS students in lower classes could join the course if there is room and they have passed the AP Spanish exam. | *Students may dual-enroll at their boundary school and complete their Bridge course at MCHS if they don't want to attend MCHS full-time. Families doing this would be responsible for their own transportation to and from MCHS. |
