Melanie Christensen: A Real-life Miss Honey

Melanie Christensen - Millville Elementary Teacher of the Year 2025

In Roald Dahl’s perennial classic “Matilda,” the lives of many young children are shaped by their loving teacher, Miss Honey. Miss Honey is everything a teacher of young children should be—sweet, caring, intelligent, and passionate about learning. The students and staff of Millville Elementary School are delighted to spotlight a real-life Miss Honey - Mrs. Melanie Christensen - as their 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year.

“Melanie is phenomenal,” CCSD Elementary Instructional Coach Trisha Duersch said. “She loves her kindergarten students with power, vigor, and a genuine authenticity!”

This is Christensen’s seventh year in teaching kindergarten - a role she cherishes.

Mrs. Christensen beamed as she spoke. “My favorite part of teaching is my students!” she said. “I love seeing their excitement as they come through my classroom doors each year. I have an amazing opportunity to provide their first experience in a school setting, and I love seeing how much they learn and grow.”

Christensen’s classroom is a haven of love and support, qualities that both former and current students cherish. Students from previous school years often return to hug Mrs. Christensen and catch her up on their lives.

“Nothing makes me happier than that,” she said.

Teaching kindergarten is not a job for the faint of heart, but Christensen’s inherent energy and joy make her well-suited for the challenge. More importantly, she loves it.

“I get to come to school and work with the most enthusiastic, energetic, and loving group of five- and six-year-olds,” she said. “Working with kindergarteners is fun!”

Christensen’s passion for teaching inspires her students and colleagues. Many shared their love of her radiant smile and kind heart.

“If you have had any time with Melanie, you’ve left feeling better,” Duersch said. “She makes you feel uplifted, valued, and that you belong. And she does this with her kindergarteners every day.”

“My love for education and learning inspires me,” Christensen said. “I want to be the best teacher I can be, and I am always trying to learn and grow as an educator. I’m also inspired by my students and their capacity to learn. Nothing is more rewarding than helping a child learn those skills that will support them throughout their lives. That is powerful!”
