From Childhood Dream to Classroom Hero: Honoring Andrea Nelson

From early childhood until high school graduation and beyond, many children are repeatedly asked one question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

For Andrea Nelson, the answer was always the same.

“Ever since I was a little girl,” she said, “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher.” I had a really kind second-grade teacher who showed me she cared. Ever since then, that’s what I wanted to do.”

That early inspiration led Nelson to pursue a degree in elementary education and a Master’s Degree in reading. Eleven years into her teaching career, her passion has only deepened.

At a recent school board meeting, Nibley principal Cindy King spoke about Nelson with warmth and enthusiasm. 

“Andrea makes learning fun and exciting,” she said. “She truly believes in every single one of her students. You can see how much she cares, and it shows in how much her students learn and grow.”

Nelson accepted the recognition with a bright smile. She expressed gratitude for her Nibley community and shared what motivates her most in the classroom.

“My favorite part of being a teacher is watching the kids’ growth,” she said. “I especially love teaching reading. At the beginning of the year, they’re reading these little tiny words, and then they get to the point where they can read huge, long words. I just love those light bulb moments when the kids get it, and their faces light up and they smile!”

Principal King also praised Nelson’s ability to foster a positive classroom environment.

“Andrea is a simply terrific teacher!” she said. “She has a warm and welcoming classroom where every student feels like they belong. She's also amazing at classroom management – her kids are engaged and learning, but it's also a really positive and safe space.”

King’s words are clearly reflected in Nelson’s classroom. A recent visit revealed a gaggle of joyful first-graders eagerly engaged, hanging onto their teacher’s every word.

“The kids inspire me,” Nelson said. “I love working with them! I just can’t imagine doing another job because I love being here.”
