Baseball:

The Ridgeline Baseball Team snatched their second-straight Region 11 title. The Riverhawks claimed a decisive championship victory over the Bobcats, with a score of 7-0. They advanced to the semifinals of the 4A State Championship, taking third place.

“It’s pretty tough to beat us unless we beat ourselves,” coach Justin Jensen told The Herald Journal. “I keep telling them all year that if we can beat the Riverhawks, we’re going to win most of our games, and that’s been true most of the time. Man, hats off to our guys. They’ve put together a good season.”

Girls Golf:

Ridgeline’s Girls Golf team went undefeated in Region 11 play, claiming their second-straight Region 11 Championship! They were led by senior Maddie Fujimoto, who won the individual title. The team advanced to the finals of the 4A State Championship, earning second place.

“It’s been a fun ride this year,” Riverhawks coach Julie Major told The Herald Journal. “I don’t ever talk to the girls about golf. I give them a treat and a hug and try to keep their spirits up. I don’t look at scores or talk about golf, but just try to encourage them.”

Boys Soccer:

The Riverhawks pulled out a nail-biting Region 11 title, narrowly avoiding a three-way tie with the Wolves and the Bobcats. Heading into their final game, they were the only team that could still claim the title outright, and they seized that opportunity. They cemented their win on Senior Night, to the delight of all.

“We absolutely wanted to be outright Region Champs,” head coach Richard Alexander told The Herald Journal. “We have such a good region that it makes sense that every year it goes down to the very last game to decide Region. It’s a compliment to our entire region. To win outright is amazing.”

Boys Tennis:

Claiming the Region 11 title came down to the wire for the Ridgeline Riverhawks, who were locked in a battle with the Green Canyon Wolves all season. Each team entered the Region 11 Championships with an 11-1 record. It came down to a five-point difference in the end, and the Riverhawks clinched it by sweeping in Singles play.

Dillon Johnson, Riverhawks 1st Singles player, was an exceptional standout. The senior capped off his fourth-straight undefeated Region 11 title with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win. He carried the momentum into the 4A State Championship match, where he claimed his third silver medal! He is the only Region 11 boys 1st singles player to do so in recent memory.

Senior Nixon Olson and sophomore Ben Simon, the second and third Singles players, respectively, also capped off the season with individual Region 11 gold medals. Olson went undefeated in this year’s Region 11 play.

Green Canyon’s doubles teams came together to sweep the division’s Region 11 doubles gold medals. The region tournament was a bittersweet day for the Wolves because Ian Olson, who played 1st doubles with Jonny Bingham all season, suffered a stroke and could not play. Varsity alternate Thomas Wilkinson stepped in, and together, he and Bingham claimed the championship in honor of their teammate. As a show of solidarity, all members of Green Canyon’s team showed up to the tournament wearing purple socks (Olson’s favorite color) and patches that said “Ian.”

Riverhawks 1st doubles players Harrison Daines and Gavin Tait demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and camaraderie with the Wolves, showing their support for Olson by donning patches of their own and writing his name on their legs.

At 2nd doubles, Green Canyon’s Tage Longhurst and Bronson Hooley won a three-set thriller against the Riverhawks, their second close win against Ridgeline this season.

The Green Canyon Girls Track Team would not be outdone by the boys. They, too, claimed the Region 11 title, accumulating a slew of gold, silver, and bronze medalists. Mya Hinds shot for the stars in javelin, where she claimed the Region 11 gold medal and a silver medal at the state championships! The Wolves’ Kortnee Samuelu claimed a pair of gold medals in shot put and discus. Other individual region champions include Hailey Shakespear (3200m), Alissa Hull (100m), and the 4x800m relay team: Rachel Willie, Hadlie Ballard, Avery Webber, and Madilyn Theobald.

Athletes from our three other high schools also claimed top spots on the podium Mountain Crest sophomore Lily Knowles won both the 800m and 1600m Region 11 titles, and was a runner-up in the 1600m race at state! Two of Ridgeline’s medley teams – Paisley Zollinger, Sierra Dean, Abbey Hobbs, and Makaydi Jenks (4x100m) won their event, as did the 4x200m team composed of Avery Duncan, Sierra Dean, Abbey Hobbs, and Makaydi Jenks.

The Bobcats, too, held their ground against some fierce competition. Their star athlete was Sadie Stewart, who was both the Region Champion and State Runner-up in the high jump. She was followed by Kate Sundstrom, who took home a pair of gold medals for her Region 11 titles in the 100 and 300m hurdles. Lili Madsen rounded off the Bobcat wins with a spectacular long jump.

Boys Volleyball:

It was a flawless Region 11 season for the Bobcats, who capped off their perfect record in a nail-biting five-setter with Ridgeline on Senior Night! It was a proud and emotional moment for the Bobcats, who pulled out the win after losing the first two sets.

“The boys showed grit,” head coach Treva McUne told The Herald Journal. “We knew it was going to be a battle, …[but] they (the boys) responded well.”

Bobcat setter Hayden Davis also praised his teammates. “We just played as a team. We decided to come out as a team and play together.”

While we can’t acknowledge every athlete or team by name, we are proud to celebrate our outstanding district athletes’ efforts, commitment, and accomplishments. If we have inadvertently missed a state champion team or athlete in this post, please let us know so we can add them! Special thanks to The Herald Journal and the other photographers listed for contributing quotes and images.
