Ashley Grimnes’ Teaching Makes Math Meaningful

It’s no secret that a good teacher inspires their students. Sometimes, this encouragement is subject or task-specific. Often, however, the deepest impact a teacher has on students is a result of the relationships they cultivate together. Such is the case for Ashley Grimnes, North Cache Middle School’s 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year. Her path to education started with a teacher, and she now strives to create a similar environment for her students.
“I got into teaching because of my kindergarten teacher,” Grimnes said. “It didn’t matter what anyone’s name was, where they came from, or who their parents were; she treated each and every one of us the same. Her class was the first time that I felt important to someone, and I want to be that person for someone else.”

With 16 years of teaching in the books, Grimnes has undoubtedly had a lot of practice. Furthermore, it brings her immense satisfaction.
“I love the middle school age group,” she said. “I just enjoy the day with them. The minute my classroom door shuts, I’m in my ‘realm.’”
Grimnes navigates her classroom like a social chameleon, engaging with her students on their own terms. One minute, she laughs and jokes with a group of giggling girls. The next, she kneels by the desk of a bashful boy, offering quiet encouragement. She redirects with patience and confidence, and her students love her ability to help them feel seen and appreciated, just as they are.

Mrs. Grimnes hopes her relationship-building efforts also empower students to cultivate their mathematic skill sets.
“I love math,” she said. “Math has always been exciting to me. It’s like a puzzle. There’s not just one way to get to the answer. I want my students to explore math and have adventures with it! Ultimately, I want to help my students build confidence.”
“Ashley consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that every student fully grasps the material,” North Cache Principal Cindy Parkinson said. “She places a strong emphasis on building their understanding of key concepts. Ashley collaborates closely with her peers to ensure that information is presented in an accessible and engaging way for all students. Above all, Ashley truly cares about her students' success, fostering a structured and supportive environment where all can thrive.”
