Home School

What is Homeschooling?

Homeschooling means teaching your child at home instead of sending them to a public or private school. In Utah, parents have the right to homeschool their children.

Who do you need to notify to start?

Utah State Law requires that when a parent/legal guardian withdraws an enrolled school-age child for the purpose of home-schooling or chooses to not enroll a school-age child, the parent shall provide a one-time notification to the local school board of the school-age child’s district of residence.

  1. Print out and complete the Home School Notification form.
  2. Mail or bring the original notification form to Cache County School District address:

Cache County School District Legacy Campus
Student Services Department
2063 North 1200 East
North Logan, UT 84341

  1. Withdraw your student from the boundary school (if enrolled). Provide the school with a copy of the notification.
  2. Within 30 days of receipt of the notification, the Cache County School District will issue, to you, a certificate excusing the school-age minor from school attendance and will maintain a record of the notification; and the local school board and school of enrollment are not liable for the education or services of the school-age child.

Do parents have to follow a particular curriculum? What are the requirements for days and hours of instruction of a home-schooled student?

Utah does not require homeschooling parents to follow a specific curriculum. You can pick the subjects and learning materials that work best for your child. A parent of a school-age minor who attends a home school is solely responsible for:

  • the selection of instructional materials and textbooks;
  • the time, place, and method of instruction; and
  • the evaluation of the home school instruction.

The district has no authority or responsibility relative to any of the above. The curriculum, assessment, selection of home school instruction, and the time and place of instruction are all the sole responsibility of the parent/guardian.

What if we decide to enroll/re-enroll in a Cache District school after having homeschooled?

If you will no longer be home schooling your child(ren), please download, complete, and submit the Home School Non-Renewal Form to Student Services. Examples of situations that require this form include enrolling full time in public/private school, moving out of the Cache County School District boundaries, or aging out of high school.

IEP, 504, & Special Services Notice

Notice to parents/guardians of students with an IEP, 504, or other special services:

If you choose to home school your student, you may be waiving your rights to receive some or all of the special education, 504, or other special services he/she would receive if enrolled in a public school in Cache County School District; unless, you have arranged for dual enrollment consistent with Utah State Law, Section 53A-11-102.5 and Utah State Board of Education rule R277-438. It is recommended that you meet with the IEP, 504, or other special services team at your school regarding your student’s rights to special needs services before submitting your affidavit to home school.

Truancy
