Hot Shot- Heritage Mascot

I was born in Alaska to a family of dog mushers. I learned how to dog mush from a very young age and we train year round. Our family dates back to dog mushing as far back as 1732! We used to be used for transportation and mail delivery across Alaska and the US Army even used us for search and rescue missions in remote areas. We respond to our trainers with voice commands and we are considered “family” with our humans because we are extremely loyal. I love to eat! And while we are training and racing, we will eat up to 10,000 calories a day! Some of my teammates are different types of dogs such as Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, and Eskimo dogs. Every year in March, we compete in the famous Iditarod race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska covering over 1,100 miles. We race in a team of 12-16 dogs, and race for about 10 days, stopping only to eat and rest. Because of my racing background, I love to participate in the Heritage Walk-a-Thon and help encourage our Heritage Huskies get to and from school safely. I also like to participate in Husky Habits teaching our students great ways to respect our school. Please take a look at my Safety Tips and Husky Habits links below. I love being a Heritage Husky!

Kim Day- 1st Grade DLI English

Hello! My name is Kim Day. While my name is short, I am anything but! I often have students ask me just how tall I am - I really am 6 feet tall! Besides the obvious, here are a few things about me:
* I grew up in Orem, Utah but also lived briefly in New York and Louisiana before the age of 5 (I was an adorable "Air Force Brat")
* I am the youngest of 5 girls and no boys. My sisters are my best friends! They affectionately call me the "The Nice One".
* I hated exercise as a child; but now I absolutely love to be active, especially outdoors. I have run a full marathon, several half marathons, and more recently participated in several Spartan races (adult versions of obstacle courses on oversized playground equipment, only you pay an absurd amount of money to do it).
* I attended Ricks College, BYU, and WGU. I received a Bachelor's in Human Development and a Master's in Elementary Education.
* I love to travel! I have been to 27 (and counting) of the 50 States, Canada, Mexico, Spain, and Ireland.
* I am married to an amazing man, all 6'8" of him! I have two spirited and independent daughters who have also inherited our tall genes.
* I previously worked for 13 years at the Dept. of Workforce Services aiding individuals in receiving public assistance
* I am thrilled to teach at Heritage Elementary where the culture and atmosphere are positive and engaging. I seek to influence students' lives for good!

I moved to Cache Valley from California about 9 years ago, and I love seeing the mountains every day as well as experiencing spring, summer, fall, and winter. I enjoy the snow and cold just as much as the warm summers - when you might find me on a long walk around town or hiking on a canyon trail. I have 3 adult children who I love to spend time with, but it’s challenging because one lives in Arizona, one lives in Louisiana and one is studying in Florida right now. When we are all together, we like to play board games, read, talk about everything, laugh a lot, eat great food, play pickleball, go on hikes, and enjoy being outdoors in God’s beautiful creation.

I find great joy in working with my students at Heritage and love to watch as they invest in one another, solve problems together, and discover how to be better people. Fifth grade is a great opportunity to learn about what makes America special. It is a year of big changes physically, socially, and emotionally, so we practice extending grace and kindness and never give up on each other.

Maria Jones- 6th grade DLI Español

I was born in Provo, Utah and moved to Peru when I was three years old, and lived there for 14 years. I was able to meet my grandparents and relatives as well as travel to many areas and learn about different cultural traditions. I loved living 30 minutes from the beach but I've learned to love the mountains too.

While living in Washington state, I worked as a paraeducator in different grades (Preschool, K, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th) and also had experience with Spanish DLI in the younger grades. I was an interpreter/translator for the Logan School District for 10 years.

I love teaching in Spanish and being able to share my culture and traditions with my students.  My passion to teach comes from wanting to help my students contribute to society and prepare them for the future while we enjoy the present and its lessons. I love to teach science and one way to engage my students is to do experiments and projects where they can connect what they learn to their everyday use. Throughout the year, I encourage my students to be leaders, to be kind, to learn from their mistakes, to move forward, and to give their best.

Hello Heritage Huskies!  My name is Courtney Walker. I am so excited to be the Art Specialist here at Heritage. I have a background in teaching, as well as art. I received my degree in Elementary Education, with an emphasis in Middle School Mathematics, from Utah State University in 2012. After graduating, I taught 6th Grade Language Arts & Reading for two years at Willow Valley Middle School, in Wellsville.  After starting a family, I decided to become a stay-at-home mom. During my break from teaching, I taught myself how to use Adobe programs and worked as a freelance graphic designer for nearly a decade. In 2021, I was able to be Heritage’s PTA President. I loved volunteering in the school and working with the students here. I am currently attending school online at the New York Institute of Art and Design to further grow my abilities in graphic design.

I love anything to do with art, whether it’s creating a graphic design, making a craft, doing zentangle, doodling, or even simply coloring. I also love to do puzzles, word games, and sudoku. Our family loves to go on cruises and travel, as well as play board and card games together. When the weather is warmer, I love to bike and swim.

I like to teach students that mistakes are how we learn and grow and that sometimes, like Bob Ross says, they can be “happy little accidents”. Everyone can be an artist!  I’m excited to help the students here discover what art means to them.
