ReaderPen is a handheld tool to support independent reading and literacy. Scan text with the pen to have words red out with natural speaking voices and defined with built-in dictionaries.

Formerly known as TarHeel Reader, Monarch Reader is a great website for beginning readers and older students with more severe intellectual disabilities that are learning to read. The site allows you to read simple, age appropriate books written by others as well as an easy way to write your own books and publish to the site. All books can be read using text to speech as well.

HelperBird is a Chrome extension and Google Docs AddOn that provides reading tools such as text to speech, immersive reader, page summarizer/simplifier, PDF reader, sticky notes, color overlays, and dyslexia ruler to help eyes focus on one line of text at a time.

iOS and Android apps let you snap a photo of text and have it read aloud. The website lets you upload documents or paste text to have it read aloud. Both the apps and websites are free, but the premium voices are free for a limited amount of time each day.
