E-Sports Participation Procedure
E-Sports Participation
The purpose of this policy is to establish expectations, eligibility criteria, and standards of conduct for student participation in district-sponsored electronic sports (E-Sports) programs. These activities are designed to extend the learning environment, promote teamwork, digital citizenship, and strategic thinking, while ensuring safe, appropriate, and responsible use of technology consistent with district policies.
Participation in E-Sports is a privilege, not a right. All student participants represent the school and district community, both in-person and online. Accordingly, participants are expected to:
● Model sportsmanship, respect, and integrity.
● Comply with the District Appropriate Use of Technology Policy and Student Code of Conduct.
● Promote a safe and inclusive environment that is free from harassment, bullying, and discrimination.
Eligibility
Students must meet the same academic, behavioral, and citizenship standards required for all extracurricular programs, including:
● Academic Standing: Maintain eligibility under the district’s extracurricular activity GPA and credit requirements.
● Attendance: Regular school attendance as required by district policy.
● Behavior: No current disciplinary actions that restrict participation in extracurricular programs.
● Parent/Guardian Consent: Signed parental consent and acknowledgment of the appropriate use and conduct expectations.
Appropriate Use and Digital Citizenship
Participants must adhere to the District Appropriate Use Policy at all times, including:
● Only sanctioned UHSAA Esports are permitted to access district resources.
● Use only district-approved accounts, equipment, and networks during practices and competitions.
● Refrain from installing, modifying, or deleting software without authorization.
● Prohibit use of chat, voice, or social platforms to engage in or tolerate harassment, hate speech, or inappropriate content.
● Maintain confidentiality of login credentials and respect intellectual property rights. Misuse of technology or online misconduct—whether on campus, at events, or through personal devices when representing the district—may result in suspension or removal from the team, as well as possible disciplinary action under the Student Code of Conduct.
Conduct and Sportsmanship
All participants shall:
● Demonstrate honesty, respect for opponents, and cooperation with coaches and officials.
● Avoid toxic or disruptive behavior, such as taunting, profanity, griefing, or exploitation of software bugs.
● Follow competition rules, tournament guidelines, and all Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) or district-sponsored regulations.
Any form of cheating (including use of hacks, bots, or unauthorized modifications) is strictly prohibited.
Equipment and Facilities
District technology and facilities used for E-sports must be:
● Only district-owned desktops and consoles should be used.
● Devices must be inventoried and configured by the tech department.
● Only games that UHSAA sanctions may be played on district machines.
● Reserved and supervised by a staff coach or advisor.
● Maintained per IT protocols.
● Used exclusively for approved educational and competitive purposes.
● Sanctioned Esports should be held in a designated space that utilizes hardware designed explicitly for E-Sports.
● Classroom or computer lab equipment should not be used for dual purposes with Esports.
● Networks should be segmented, and only wired networks should be used.
● Consoles and desktops should be registered with the tech department to perform only Esports-specific hardware functions on the E-Sports network.
Students are responsible for the care of equipment assigned to them and may be held financially liable for negligent damage or loss.
Social Media and Public Representation
Students representing CCSD in E-Sports must uphold the same digital citizenship standards on personal and team social media accounts, including:
● No posting of offensive, discriminatory, or vulgar content.
● No sharing of confidential team strategies or internal communications.
● Respect for district logos, uniforms, and branding standards.
Terms of Participation
Data such as, but not limited to, usernames, gameplay statistics, chat logs, and player profiles, is governed by the End User License Agreement (EULA, Terms of Service, and Privacy Policy of each respective third-party service. Consent to these third-party agreements is a prerequisite for participation.
As an officially sanctioned activity by the UHSAA, policies governing the release of student “Directory Information” apply. Accordingly, the District may disclose directory information, such as a student’s name, team roster inclusion, and participation in official events, for purposes including, but not limited to, official rosters, event programs, school publications, and media reports.
Students shall use district-supplied accounts or usernames for all official team practices, competitions, and communications when provided. This measure is intended to create a layer of separation between a student's personal information and their activity on external platforms.
School-specific club activities must follow the same policies and requirements as sanctioned activities.
Violations and Disciplinary Actions
Violations of this policy or related district policies (Appropriate Use, Student Conduct, Bullying and Harassment, Academic Eligibility) may result in:
● Warnings or probation.
● Temporary suspension from practices or competitions.
● Permanent removal from the team.
● Referral for further school disciplinary action.
Appeals may be made to the principal, who will confer with the Executive Director of Secondary Education.
Oversight and Review
The Superintendent or designee shall ensure annual review of this policy to align with evolving best practices in technology use, student safety, and competitive gaming.
