Policy No. 3600: Adult Education

The adult education program shall be considered an integral part of the overall education program offered by the district and shall be under the general direction of the superintendent. 

Definitions 

  1. “Adult” means an individual 18 years of age or over. 
  2. “Adult Education” means organized educational programs below the 

collegiate/postsecondary level, other than regular full-time K -12 secondary education programs: 

  1. Provided by LEAs or other eligible providers; 
  2. Opportunities afforded for individuals having demonstrated both presence and intent to reside within the state of Utah; 
  3. Provided for out-of-school youth (16 years of age and older) or adults who have not graduated from high school; and 
  4. Provided to improve literacy levels and to further high school level education. 

The director of the adult education program shall organize classes, promote enrollments, disseminate general information concerning the program, aid in the selection of instructions, arrange for facilities, and hold staff meetings for orientation and upgrading purposes. He/she shall further be responsible for the many other activities incident to such an office and for the desirable functioning and general welfare of the adult education program. 

The adult education courses offered shall include any and all in which there is sufficient interest both in the vocational and general education fields, subject to the approval of the superintendent. 

Housing for adult education and other facilities shall be provided by the Board of Education. Any school building of the district shall be made available upon proper arrangement by the director for use in the conducting of adult education classes. 

The faculty for the adult education school shall be made up of school teachers, business, professional, trade, farm and civic leaders who may be available and are otherwise qualified. 

Extension courses sponsored by the University, discussion courses sponsored by the Parent Teacher Association, and other courses offered by other groups may become integral parts of the Adult Education program if approved by the superintendent. 

Any adult person of post high school age shall be eligible for enrollment in adult education classes. Any student ages 16-18 whose high school graduation class has not graduated may be eligible upon application and verification of withdrawal from traditional K-12 schooling.

All enrollees shall be charged the registration or laboratory fee established by the Board of Education.
