Middle School Curriculum Requirements Procedures Beginning the 2026-2027 School Year
- Sixth Grade Transition
Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, sixth grade will be integrated into the district’s middle school model. At that time, sixth grade will follow the middle school schedule while meeting curriculum requirements aligned to Utah State Board of Education Rule R277-700. Each middle school will develop and share a transition plan to prepare students and families for this shift.
II. Middle School Curriculum Requirements (Grades 6–8)
Grade 6 Requirements
- Core Courses:
○ English Language Arts (3 Trimesters)
○ Mathematics (3 Trimesters)
○ Science (3 Trimesters)
○ Social Studies (2 trimesters)
○ PE/Health (1 trimester)
○ Educational Techology/Digital Literacy (1 trimester)
○ Fine Arts (1 trimester): Options include Art, Choir, Orchestra, or Band ○ ELA Extension/Writing (1 trimester)
○ Math Lab/Extension (1 trimester)
- Electives (2 trimester options):
○ Students may choose from Art, Choir, Orchestra, Band, and one additional school-determined option based on resources.
- Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Modifications:
○ For DLI students, DLI 2 Language will be offered for three trimesters. This course will take the place of the ELA Extension and two elective courses.
○ In place of the standard sixth-grade Social Studies course, DLI Social Studies will be offered for two trimesters to fulfill the Social Studies core requirement.
Grade 7 Requirements
- Core Courses (3 trimesters unless otherwise noted):
○ English Language Arts
○ Mathematics
○ Integrated Science

○ Writing Extension (1 trimester)
○ College and Career Awareness (1 trimester)
○ Digital Literacy (1 trimester)
○ Health (1 trimester)
○ PE (1 trimester)
○ Utah History (1 trimester)
○ Fine Arts: At least one course in 7th or 8th grade (Art, Choir, Orchestra, Band) ● Electives (3 trimester options):
○ Art, Choir, Orchestra, Band, and other school-determined options based on resources.
- Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Modifications:
○ For DLI students, DLI 3 Language will be offered as two of the elective course options.
○ In addition, DLI Culture/History/Media A will be offered to fulfill the third elective option.
Grade 8 Requirements
- Core Courses (3 trimesters unless otherwise noted):
○ English Language Arts
○ Mathematics
○ Integrated Science
○ US History I with Writing Integration
○ College and Career Awareness (1 trimester)
○ PE (1 trimester)
- Electives (up to 4 trimester options):
○ Art, Choir, Orchestra, Band, and other school-determined options based on resources.
- Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Modifications:
○ For DLI students, DLI 4 Language will be offered as two of the elective course options.
○ In addition, DLI Culture/History/Media B will be offered to fulfill the third elective option.
III. Intervention and Enrichment
Each middle school will include a designated intervention/enrichment period within the daily schedule to:
- Provide targeted academic support for students below proficiency.
- Offer academic extensions for students demonstrating mastery.
- Be flexible based on continuous academic data monitoring.
IV. Course Substitution Process
Students may request course substitutions for core requirements under the following conditions: ● The request must be made by the parent/guardian, and must meet the following criteria: ○ The course, activity, or experience is similar in content to the required course. ○ The substitution aligns with the student’s Plan for College and Career Readiness (PCCR).
- All substitution requests require written approval from a school administrator and school counselor.
- If denied, the student or parent may appeal to a review panel that includes the Executive

Director of Teaching and Learning and the Executive Director of Secondary Schools.
