Policy No. 4500: Class Size Policy
Class Size Policy
The Board recognizes the importance of maintaining manageable class sizes to benefit student learning. Acknowledging that several factors at the school site may impact the actual class size, including school enrollment, teacher prep, and program restrictions, every effort should be made to ensure that class sizes remain as small as feasible.
The following funding ratios are set to staff each school on a per-pupil basis. School administrators have the discretion to adjust classes to meet the needs of the school and program.
- Kindergarten - 3rd Grade: one teacher for every 23.07 students
- 4th - 8th Grade: one teacher for every 28.005 students
- 9th -12th Grade: one teacher for every 30.105 students
These ratios include state class size reduction funds and the ESL recapture factor. The funding ratio is the total number of full-time positions available to each school, called “Full Time Equivalent” (FTE). The school principal allocates the assigned FTEs as needed in each school. Add-on staff from other resources, such as Trustlands and TSSA, are not included in the calculation of FTEs.
