Emergency Epinephrine Auto-Injectors at School Procedure
A. Epinephrine (EpiPen or variations): These may be available for emergency use in severe allergic reactions. Designated and trained personnel by the school nurse will recognize symptoms, call 911, and administer an EpiPen as needed. Annual training will include proper EpiPen use and storage.
B. EpiPen Availability: EpiPen(s) for emergency anaphylactic or severe allergic reactions are available in accordance with Utah Code 26-41-101. They are stored in a readily accessible area for school personnel but not accessible to students.
C. Designated and trained school personnel: Each school shall have at least two CPR/First Aid trained personnel. Additional training is provided to recognize allergic reaction symptoms, notify parents, call 911, and administer emergency epinephrine. Proper EpiPen use and written instructions are included in the training. EpiPen(s) are monitored for expiration and replaced when needed.
D. Family-Provided Medication: Emergency epinephrine and antihistamines provided by a student's family are kept at the school if the proper medication authorization form is submitted annually.
E. Treatment Protocol: Epinephrine should not be the sole treatment but used to alleviate symptoms temporarily. Emergency personnel (911) must be contacted whenever an EpiPen is administered.

- The supervising physician for Cache County School District will be the authorized prescriber for stock Epinephrine and will write prescriptions as needed to replace this medication.
- The prescribing health care provider for stock epinephrine will also provide a signed protocol for administering stock epinephrine.
- Epinephrine has an expiration date of about 12 months from the date of manufacture. Schools should notify the school nurse when medication is expiring.
Epinephrine will be stored in an area out of reach of the student body, but accessible to staff when needed.
