Emergency Administration of Glucagon at School Procedure

A. A Utah Department of Health-provided form is mandatory for diabetic students to authorize glucagon administration in case of an emergency.

B. The form must be signed by the student's parent and healthcare provider.

C. The form certifies the prescription of glucagon for the student.

D. The form requests identification and training of school personnel for glucagon administration.

E. The form authorizes emergency glucagon use.

F. School nurses will conduct initial and annual refresher training sessions for designated school personnel. Training includes:

  1. techniques recognizing symptoms necessitating glucagon administration;
  2. storage and usage protocols of glucagon; and
  3. procedures for contacting 911 and the parent/guardian in emergency situations.

G. A trained employee may administer glucagon at a school to a student with a Glucagon authorization if:

  1. the student is exhibiting the symptoms that warrant the administration and glucagon; and
  2. a licensed health care provider is not immediately available.
