AGENDA ITEMS
4. Financial Report- Emili Larsen
Expenditures:
Reflections - $171
Literacy Prizes - $321
$492 total spent
$16,287 left in bank account
5. Principal Update - Mr. Robins
You can now vote on the 2024-2025 Calendar (there are 4 options).
Kindergarten will be starting the same day as elementary starting next year.
Heritage still can’t offer all-day Kindergarten because of space.
6. Service Club- Mr. Mallory
Thank you for organizing the hot chocolate for the students- they loved it!
Mirrors with vinyl saying “I am” will be given to students – the power of what we say to ourselves in our minds is huge. There is a bulletin board with a mirror by his office – we need to change our mindset. He will be talking about resilience and being positive with ourselves – an assembly is being organized to discuss and present this topic. Stickers will be put on the back of the mirrors with a quote.
Service Club – need ideas!
Kendal Welker suggested making video messages. Natalie Peterson suggested for Valentines Day to make valentines for nursing homes/assisted living. Carol DeFriez suggested that students learn a song in Music prep and then sing it for someone.
Kindness Night in May – would love ideas for this as well.
7. Teacher Representative- Carol DeFriez
Thank you again for the hot chocolate! The students love that one!
February 29 – March 1 is PTC – a survey will be sent to teacher about a menu for food provided by PTA on these dates.
8. Library/PTA Changes- Mrs. Gibbs informed the PTA that she will no longer have contract time to do Reading Counts, Book Fairs, and “One Book One School” and needs the PTA to help.
This is what was decided:
Reading Counts: PTA will take over reading counts until the end of the year so kids can finish what they have worked towards. Kendal Welker will take over the program until the end of the year.
205 certificates were earned this month by students. We’d like to send progress to teachers – teachers should have access to students’ progress in Reading Counts. Teachers will pass out the certificates and prizes (Kendal will put them in teacher boxes monthly).
Book Fairs: PTA will not take over book fairs. We will continue help provide volunteers if Mrs. Gibbs chooses to continue to have the book fairs.
One Book One School: PTA will take over this program going forward. Emili Larsen will be in charge of it this year, alongside Jami Stokes.
9. Holiday Activities (Thursday, December 21 2:30-3:30)- How did it go?
Seemed to run really smooth. An idea was brought up to send out volunteer sign-ups digitally and at Back to School Night for room parents. Another idea was to have something online for volunteers to continually sign up over the year. We could use a QR Code/Link to a Google Form for next year.
We’d like to keep separate holiday sign-ups for room parents (Halloween and Christmas).
For finding volunteers, we could set up a link online (Facebook, School Website) and have a paper to direct where to sign up to volunteer (using the same link) and update throughout the year. Courtney Walker will talk to Shalayne Merrill about putting it on the school website.
10. Science Fair- January 25 6:30-7:30 (kids set up at 6)- Catherine Wells
Next year should we send home registration for the science fair at STEAM night?
We currently have 2 moderators (maybe change this title so that it encourages volunteers to sign up – it’s just reviewing science projects). More volunteers are needed. Catherine made a Google Doc to have volunteers come at 5:00 to set up tables. She also needs helpers to do check-in table and a volunteer to help with prize table. We could post on Facebook and a spot on the school website.
Catherine presented an idea to put a table up with entry forms to display in the front of the school to encourage students to sign up.
After the Science Fair is over, the displays will be set up on the stage.
11. One Book One School/School Wide Book- Emili Larsen and Jami Stokes have ideas for books
Book selected: “The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place (the Mysterious Howling)” by Maryrose Wood
This book is part of a series, so we hope it will encourage students to continue reading further.
An idea is to send home a bookmark with questions and a schedule on the back. We could put a note at the bottom with something like, “Thank you parents for participating in kickbacks (with logos) that pays for activities like this.”
Teachers could talk to parents about the book prior to reading, at PTC? Should we send books home at PTC in March? Official dates to be determined.
We could also make a video – Matt Mallory could help with this.
For advertising of this activity, we could design a poster – we were given permission to use the school poster printer.
Courtney Walker can help design the bookmarks and poster.
Students could answer questions for a small treat/prize? Weekly/Daily? We could ask a question as students come in to school. If they answer correctly, they can get a Frootie.
Budget - $1200 towards books; Heritage Elementary can make up the rest of what is needed (Mr. Robins said he can continue to support this in the future).
“Schoolwide Book Prizes” Budget was motioned, voted on, and passed. $200 can be used towards prizes for this event.
The book is worth 12 points on Reading Counts. Reading Level is 8.5 (ages 8-13).
We will be doubling the points the book is worth – Kendal Welker will edit it in Reading Counts.
12. Walkathon April 15, 16- Heather Holmes
It was suggested to check for prizes on Black Friday for next year’s Walkathon Fundraiser.
Any ideas for big prizes for the Top 3? Ideas suggested were a Lego set and Megaplex Movie passes.
13. January 12 – Virtual day at the Capital/ Feb 9- PTA Founders Day at the Capital
We would love to see if another PTA member would like to attend this. We can pay for their admission.
