What’s Next?
During this process there is data that has to be collected to help the teacher determine what the next steps are. In some cases, the teacher may determine that the supports given initially are sufficient and no other steps will be taken at this time. In other cases, the teacher along with the TAG team will determine additional support in the form of special education may be sought. During this process you will be notified and your permission would need to be given to proceed with any evaluation. If this happens, your child’s teacher will work with our special education experts to evaluate your child to determine eligibility for additional supports outside of the regular education classroom. Once any evaluations have been completed you will be notified and a meeting will be set to discuss qualification and supports going forward.
How Can I Help at Home?
Your child’s teacher has been working to provide support in the classroom. Some ideas for at home support:
-Getting a good night sleep
-Using positive language when it comes to school and homework
-Set behavior expectations and follow through
-Supporting the classroom teacher by reinforcing things the teacher is doing in class (particularly with behavior)
-Check your child’s backpack. Provide support in completing homework.
The Process
How long with this take?
The process of finding successful interventions is not always an easy one. Often we have to find through trial and error an intervention that is beneficial for your child. Due to this, the process may take several months to find an intervention that is beneficial.
What if my child doesn’t qualify for Special Education?
Our goal is not to place students in a special education. Our goal is to provide quality education in the least restrictive environment, which for most students is within the general education classroom. If a student does not qualify for special education services the interventions and supports the teacher has identified will be continued where possible.

A behavior and academic resource guide for parents.
As teachers, our goal is to help your child succeed at school. Some students academic performance or behavior in school require additional support. The role of a teacher is to identify areas where support can be given. Sometimes this means that your child may need more support than can be given by the classroom teacher alone. This guide will help you understand the process your child’s teacher goes through to provide that support.
NOTIFICATION
If your child’s teacher believes your child needs additional support they will be in contact with you and our School TAG team
DATA COLLECTION
Interventions will be provided to your child to identify solutions that suit your child’s needs
EVALUATION
Your child’s teacher will meet with the TAG team to determine if further interventions or additional support are needed.
What is an intervention?
Teachers will determine interventions based on your child’s need. An intervention is a support for targeted areas that your student is struggling with. When a teacher is providing an intervention your child may be working in a small group or one on one with a teacher receiving instruction for that targeted area. An intervention can also include trackers, behavioral support, or assistive technology. Data will be collected before, during, and after the intervention. The data collected is evaluated to determine the effectiveness of the intervention.
What is the TAG team?
The TAG team is a Teacher Assisted Guidance group to support the teacher. The TAG team’s primary responsibility is to support the classroom teacher when working with students who need academic or behavior help. Your child’s teacher will work with the TAG team to identify interventions and support for your child.
Who is on the TAG team?
The TAG team is comprised of a group of seasoned classroom teachers, special education teachers, the school counselor, the school principal, and our district psychologist.
