Letter from Principal Burt

  • To our Amazing Canyon Families,

The first day of school is racing toward us! Hopefully your kiddos had a great summer break and are excited to head back to school. We’re excited to see their faces and to start a great new school year.  Our custodial staff has the building in ship shape and our teachers have been working double time to get their rooms ready.  We have a few new faces in our staff and a few in new places. We want to welcome Sara Briscoe and Dana Stewart in 6th grade, Lindsey Thompson in 3rd grade, Gentri Fairbourn in Kindergarten and Tawni Smith as our Computer specialist.  A few grade changes with Kennedy Fielding moving to 5th grade, David Hawkes moving to 4th grade,  Cara Mortensen moving to 2nd grade.   We also want to welcome back Jenn Scott to 3rd grade.

Back to School Open House is on Tuesday, August 20th from 6-7:30 p.m.  You’ll be able to come meet your teacher(s), see the classrooms, get information, sign up for so many important things and purchase the new Canyon Colt spiritwear to get ready for the first day of school.

Back to school suggested supply lists for your students can be found on our school website. Just a reminder that the items on this list will be used during the regular school day.  They may be brought from home on a voluntary basis, otherwise they will be furnished by the school.  You can find the lists here:  Teacher Supply List

School hours are 9:05 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Early Release on Fridays at 2:20 p.m. Please, don’t send your students before 8:35 a.m. unless they are participating in one of our before school programs.  We don’t have supervision available before then and the front doors will still be locked.

We would also like to encourage you to apply for free and reduced lunch. Whether you think you qualify or not please apply, you might be pleasantly surprised. As a Title I school, a huge chunk of our funding depends on the number of students who qualify for this program.  It is strictly confidential and also includes breakfast if you choose to take advantage of it.  All Free and Reduced lunch applications MUST be done online which can be accessed from the District website: Free and Reduced Price Lunch.

Please log into your PowerSchool accounts and make sure your information is updated and as accurate as possible.  We can’t communicate with you if we don’t have the tools to do so. You can also access our school website for more information. Contact the school office if you need any help accessing PowerSchool.

Our first priority is the safety of our students. All doors will remain locked during the school day. Please enter the school through the front doors only using the “buzz in” system where you may be asked to identify yourself and/or show current identification. We have the best school community in the valley.  Thank you so much for your continued support of us and your children. Here’s to another great year!!

    Leslie Burt, Canyon Elementary Principal
