Weather Closures and Delays

  • The decision by the Cache County School District to issue a Late Start, Early Out or Closure for its schools follows set procedures and guidelines. A team at the CCSD Transportation Department, which serves both Cache County and Logan School Districts, carefully monitors weather forecasts and current conditions, relying on information from the National Weather Service and other local entities responsible for road conditions. This team considers factors such as snow accumulations, temperature, visibility, winds, and road conditions, both before and during inclement weather. Based on their observations and communication with local officials, this team makes a recommendation to the Superintendent’s Office on whether there should be a Late Start, Early Out or Closure for district schools.

After taking all factors and recommendations into consideration, the Superintendent and other district officials make a final decision on any Late Start, Early Out, or Closure. First and foremost, this decision focuses on the safety and well-being of students and staff while traveling to and from school. See this flowchart for more information.

Once a decision is made on a school Late Start, Early Out or Closure, the Superintendent’s Office contacts the district’s Communications Office, which gets the word out to parents and staff, utilizing an emergency alert system which sends phone, text, and email alerts. Preferences as to how these notifications are sent can be set in PowerSchool. Announcements are also posted on all CCSD websites. Closures and delays will be announced on the local radio station, KVNU. Parents will only be notified if there is a delayed start, early out, or closure. No notification means that schools are running on a regular schedule.

Evening alerts to alter the next school day schedule will be sent by 9:00 p.m. Morning alerts to alter the same day schedule will be sent by 6:00 a.m. Schools will make decisions on their extracurricular activities, based on the safety of students and staff, after consulting with transportation.

The safety of our students and staff is a top priority. Decisions to delay, to hold, or to cancel school can often be complex. Cache County School District covers a large geographical area in which weather and road conditions may vary. We encourage families and employees to make the best decisions they can, given local conditions.

These procedures may be adjusted depending on extenuating weather conditions.
