Letter from Principal Wilson
Dear Parents and Students,
Excitement is in the air as another new school year approaches. I always look forward to the students coming back to school. It is a very lonely (and quiet) place without them. It will finally feel “like school” with everyone here!
We will hold our Back-to-School Open House on Monday, August 19th from 5:30 P.M. until 6:30 P.M. This is an excellent opportunity for you to meet your child’s teacher and visit the classroom. At Back-to-School Night you will receive school information that will be important for you to review regarding the upcoming school year. All district policies are posted on the district web site. If you would like a paper copy of these items, please let the front office know. If you feel like you need to spend an extended amount of time visiting with your child’s teacher, please set up an appointment for another day and time. There will not be time during this evening open house to “conference” individually with your child’s teacher.
Kindergarten parents need to sign-up for an assessment time for your incoming kindergartener to meet individually with their teacher on August 15th through the 23rd. The Online Scheduler Link is on our school's homepage under Quick Links. Log-in instructions are accessible in the Quick Links list also.
Parents, make sure you have signed up for PowerSchool. You should have received an email with instructions to follow to help you through this process. During the school year, the school sends out general information and reminders via emails, phone calls, and text messages. You are the only one who can change your settings in PowerSchool. Without changing your preferences you will NOT receive text messages.
The first day of classes for students (1st - 6th) is Wednesday, August 21st. The first bell rings at 9:10 A.M. with classes beginning promptly at 9:15 A.M. It is important that your children arrive at school on time daily. If they show up even a few minutes late they will miss out on crucial instructional time, which definitely adds up over the course of the year. I appreciate your help in ensuring that your children are in class and ready to learn. School will end each day at 3:35 P.M. except on Fridays. On Fridays school will be dismissed at 2:20 P.M. The first day Kindergarteners will attend school is on Tuesday, August 27th.
The doors to the school will open when the first bus arrives, which is at approximately 8:50 A.M. Please do not send your children to school early. We do not have supervision for them before this time. If your children do arrive early, they will be asked to wait by the main entrance until our duty aides arrive.
Please review the following policies with your children: Cell Phone Usage Policy, Dress Code/Rules of Conduct Policy, Acceptable Use Policy The Dress Code Policy should also be helpful when shopping for Back-to-School clothes.
Birch Creek Elementary has a very supportive School Community Council. This year we are in need of several parent members to join our council. Please contact me (firstname.lastname@example.org or 792-7692) if you are interested in serving on the School Community Council. This is a 2-year commitment, with meetings being held at 4:00 the last Tuesday of each month. The council's main focus is to help develop the School Land Trust Plan. If more parents than we have openings for are interested in being a part of this committee, we will hold an election for these positions the first week in September.
An application for free or reduced school lunch will be in your Back-to-School packet. If you fill out an application online, you can receive approval within a day. Here is the online link: Free and Reduced-price Lunch Information and Applications In order for your children to receive this benefit you must reapply every year. If you feel you qualify, please sign up today. All school-aged children in income-eligible households can receive meal benefits regardless of immigration status of household members. Information provided by the household will not be used for immigration-related purposes.
Another plan that needs to be filled out yearly is the Student Health Care Plan. Students who have asthma, allergies, diabetes, etc. will need to meet with the district nurses and school personnel to update this year’s plan.
I look forward to a great year at Birch Creek Elementary. My door is always open. Welcome back to school!
Trudy J. Wilson, Principal
