What is Section 504?

  • Section 504 is the part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
that applies to individuals with disabilities. It helps protect
the civil rights of persons with disabilities. Section 504 is a
nondiscrimination statute, prohibiting discrimination based on
    disability.

Section 504 requires that no person with a disability
be excluded from or denied benefits of any program
receiving federal financial assistance; this includes
    education.

    Federal Requirement

Section 504 and special education (IDEA) are two possible
service options for children with disabilities. All school districts
should have a Section 504 Coordinator to answer questions
    regarding Section 504 procedures.
